China Drying Network News According to Kyodo News, due to the rapid increase in demand for helium in emerging market countries such as China, the shortage of helium in Japan is becoming increasingly severe. About 90% of Japan's radon gas is imported from the United States, and this year, the United States' radon producer decided to cut production due to equipment failure, which has caused Japan to suffer from worse conditions. The use of helium for a wide range of applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instruments used in medical examinations, amusement park balloons, and semiconductor production, has caused a shortage in all aspects.
Tokyo Disneyland's operator "Oriental Paradise Company" has decided to stop selling balloons in the park from November 21 due to a shortage of radon gas to inflate cartoon balloons such as Mickey Mouse.
The main part of MRI requires the use of hernia. The purchasing director of the MRI sales company said with concern: "If there is a continuous shortage, there may be confusion at the medical site."
The shortage is due to the rapid economic development of China and South Korea. Due to the need for helium in cooling systems for semiconductor and fiber mass production equipment, the use of helium has increased significantly. According to Japan's Ministry of Finance, long-term supply of helium gas is in short supply. In 2000, Japan’s import price was around 1,600 yen (about RMB 120) per kilogram, and in September 2012 it rose to around 3,000 yen per kilogram.
Domestic gas manufacturers in Japan are also working hard to increase production. Dayang Japan Co., Ltd. plans to produce 6 million cubic meters of helium per year from July 2013 through a joint venture with American Natural Gas Corporation. Dayang Nitrate will enjoy half of the equity. Iwatani Industries has invested in a liquefied natural gas project in Qatar and is expected to receive 8 million cubic meters in the spring of next year. If the purchase progresses smoothly, it is expected to improve the urgent situation of demand.
