Gigabit wireless network will be powered by a power cable

Today, AT&T Labs announced a new wireless technology called Airgig designed to transmit data at gigabit speeds using existing power infrastructure. The system will transmit data at the top of the utility pole, also referred to as wirelessly transmitting data "gigabit wireless" in the millimeter waveband. AT&T expects the first field trials of the system to begin next year.
The plan announced some of the major investments in the millimeter wave system. Google is actively exploring technology as a last-mile replacement for Google Fiber, while Facebook is planning to deploy its own technology version later this year in San Jose.

AirGig is completely linear, providing almost no redundancy if one of the links fails. This is a problem for millimeter wave signals that can be absorbed by rain or other atmospheric moisture. Airgig plans to reduce the impact by sending and regenerating signals with line equipment. But without on-site testing, it is hard to say how reliable the correction will be.
