Federation of Travelers: May sales increased 4% to 1.803 million, and new energy increased by 159.1% year-on-year


On May 8th, 2018, the National Passenger Car Market Information Association held a May automobile market seminar and released an analysis report on the May passenger vehicle market. According to the report, in May 2018, the sales volume of narrow-minded passenger cars nationwide was 1.803 million, which was a year-on-year increase of 3.9% and a month-on-month decrease of 0.4%. From January to May, the cumulative sales volume was 9.283 million, an increase of 5.3% year-on-year.

From a model perspective, sales of sedan in May were 926,000, an increase of 5.4% year-on-year; sales of SUVs were 7.40 million, an increase of 3.9% year-on-year; MPV sales were 137,000, a year-on-year decrease of 5.0%.

From a brand perspective, retail sales of domestic luxury brands grew 10.8% year-on-year in May, and year-on-year growth of self-owned brands was 9.5%. The growth rate of mainstream joint venture brands was -1.1% year-on-year. Relative to the 3.9% growth rate, joint venture brands lacked a bright spot market. It was the joint venture car which fell 3.0% year-on-year, and autonomous cars rose 38.0% year-on-year.

In terms of new energy, the new energy vehicle passenger car retailed 92,000 units in May, an increase of 34.3% month-on-month and a year-on-year increase of 159.1%. Both the pure electricity and intermixing performance were strong; the cumulative retail sales of new energy passenger cars from January to May reached a total 275,000 units, an increase of 147.0%. In May, the retail growth rate of traditional fuel vehicles was only 0.5%, and new energy became the core driver of the increase in the auto market.

On May 22, the Ministry of Finance announced that the significant reduction in tariffs on imported passenger vehicles to 15% since July 1 has caused concern. From the weekly growth of retail sales in the Federation in May, the growth rate was stable in the first three weeks, the growth rate was low in the fourth week, and the retail sales in the last week were significantly restored. The fluctuation of retail weeks in May was mainly the effect of consumption wait-and-see. Fortunately, most manufacturers adjusted their product guidance prices in line with the consumption mentality. The price cut eliminated the uncertainty of prices and achieved the stabilization of retail sales at the end of May.

Since the tariffs on imported cars and parts began to be officially lowered on July 1, the effect of lowering taxes and reducing costs could not be reflected in June, and the manufacturers’ production and sales efforts will not be strong. It is estimated that the market will experience a smooth transition in June.

According to the company's view, the top three domestic sales figures for Naked Passenger Vehicles include SAIC-Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen, and SAIC-GM, which sold 170,000, 160,000 and 137,000 vehicles respectively. Geely Automobile once again won the fourth place and sold 121,000 units. In the top ten, its own brand occupied four seats.
