A team of engineers at Cambridge Silicon Radio created a software called SiRFusion that supports Google's Android devices. The software can combine WiFi signals, GPS and mobile phone sensors to map indoor venues such as shopping malls, which can help people find supermarket items. Conventional GPS signals, such as indoors, can be degraded in accuracy and reliability because walls and roofs block this signal. SiRFusion's developers added functionality by first checking the GPS and then connecting with real-time WiFi signals.
Cambridge Silicon Radio claims that the technology can be accurate to within 16 feet, such as shopping malls. However, the actual accuracy can be improved based on the WiFi signal strength. Dave, who is responsible for product line location, said: “This is a useful technology in public places, hotels and shopping malls, so that people can quickly find their own destination. For example, at the airport, aviation applications can use this technology. To allow the airline to provide guidance to airport passengers and tell passengers how long it will take him from the current location to the gate."
