HKUST Discovers New Material System to Create a New Era of Organic Solar Cells

The research team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has recently discovered a new material system that will hopefully rewrite the future development of organic solar cells. The organic solar cell produced by the material can achieve high-efficiency and high-speed charge separation under the charge separation driving force of near zero, which means that the environmentally-friendly organic solar cell can compete with the performance level of the inorganic solar cell.
This groundbreaking result was discovered by a team led by Yan He, a professor at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Science and Technology, and published in the journal Nature Energy in June.
Organic solar cells are an important third-generation solar cell technology, but it requires a driving force of 0.3 eV or more to perform the necessary steps of power generation, namely charge separation. Because of the demand for driving force, organic solar cells inevitably generate a large voltage loss, thus limiting its photoelectric conversion efficiency.
This breakthrough will have a revolutionary impact on organic solar cells. At present, the best performing organic solar cells can only achieve 12%-13% photoelectric conversion efficiency. If the driving force required for charge separation is reduced to near zero, the maximum conversion efficiency of the battery can be increased to 20%-25%. It is comparable to today's most advanced inorganic solar cells.
Yan He said that this study redefines the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency that organic solar cells can achieve in basic research and industrial applications, making the team very optimistic about the prospects of organic solar cells. In the future, we hope to work with experts in chemistry, physics and energy to create an important research platform in this exciting and fast-growing field.
