Korean ship communication security technology drafted into international standards

The “Safety Protection Technology Related to Ship Communication” developed by Korea has recently been listed as one of the draft international standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The IEC's Maritime Wireless Communication Technical Committee (IEC-TC80) recently notified the Korean Technical Standards Institute of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of the Republic of Korea that the IEC-TC80 submitted by the Korean side to the ship communication security technology developed by it as an international standard has been Supported by 16 countries including the United States, Japan and Germany, the technology has been listed as one of the draft international standards. The technology was developed by the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. South Korea handed it over to the IEC last year and recommended it as an internal standard. This technology can prevent computer viruses and hackers from invading and interfering with the ship network, ensuring the safety of the ship network and navigation system, and also preventing various devices in the ship from malfunctioning due to the increase of information signal flow, which is suitable for basic application. The ship information equipment, such as automatic ship identification devices, electronic charts, etc., is a good "helper" for the ship-to-communication system. This technology is not only suitable for all types of large and medium-sized ships, but also for leisure boats such as small ships and yachts. It is understood that the global yachts add more than 1 million dwt per year, so only providing them with a package can create a considerable market for this technology.

At present, the market size of ICT equipment for ships is estimated to be around US$800 million. European and Japanese companies play a leading role in this field, followed by Korean and Chinese companies.
