This material is made of biodegradable polylactic acid. Researchers place the material in a test tube filled with water and perform centrifugation, which causes the material to break into smaller pieces. This is then repeated, and the liquid is poured onto a flat surface and the material is allowed to dry. These broken pieces will coalesce together to form a nano-film.
The team found that this nanofilm can fit on uneven surfaces and even fit tiny wrinkles. Later they discovered that this film could protect the burn wounds from infection, and it could prevent the entry of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a pathogen that usually causes skin infections. The film can be used for three days, and researchers hope that this material can change the way burns are treated, which will help prevent infections and reduce the frequency of dressing changes. The experimental team is currently planning to test large animals.
