Ministry of Environmental Protection: Sulfur dioxide will be reduced by 400,000 tons in 2010

The 2010 National Environmental Protection Working Conference was held in Beijing today. Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian announced the 2010 pollution reduction target and the completion of pollution reduction in 2009.

The 2010 emission reduction target is: Under the circumstance that the emission of sulfur dioxide is completed one year ahead of schedule, it will strive to cut 400,000 tons more than in 2009; COD emission reduction will be based on the completion of the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” target. Strive to cut more than 200,000 tons. Ensure that the daily treatment capacity of newly added urban sewage is 10 million cubic meters, and the installed desulfurization capacity of new coal-fired power plants is 50 million kilowatts.

According to preliminary calculations, the national chemical oxygen demand and sulfur dioxide emissions continue to maintain a double downward trend in 2009, and sulfur dioxide “Eleventh Five-Year” emission reduction targets are achieved one year ahead of schedule. The proportion of Grade I-III water quality at the national control section was 48.2%, which was a year-on-year increase of 0.5%. The annual average concentration of permanganate in the national control surface water surface of the country was 5.1 mg/l, which was 10.5% lower than that in 2008 and 29.2% lower than that in 2005. According to the annual average, the ratio of air quality in 113 key environmental protection cities meeting or exceeding the national secondary standards was 65.5%, an increase of 8 percentage points year-on-year.
