Chinese Academy of Sciences team created the world's first DNA nanobot

In the recent “Nature and Biotechnology”, the results of the team of Chinese scientists at the National Nanoscience Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Arizona State University (ASU) team made a comeback: Scientists used DNA origami technology to create the world’s first smart anticancer The nano-robots can find the blood vessels that supply blood to tumors in the human body, and then release drugs to make thrombosis and block blood vessels, thus “starving” the tumors, demonstrating good efficacy and safety in animal experiments.

Cancer cells reduce the body's nutrients in large quantities, while blood vessels provide cancer cells with proliferation, oxygen, and energy. Therefore, blocking the blood vessels that supply solid tumors and starving cancer cells has been the main direction for scientists to treat cancer. For example, the arterial chemoembolization chemotherapy (TACE) commonly used in the treatment of liver cancer is directed at the hepatic artery that supplies blood to the tumor. However, this method also faces the problems of insufficient accuracy and side effects.

Since 5 years ago, the team of National Nanoscience Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences led by researchers Yuliang Yu and Ding Baoquan and Nie Guangjun decided to try to induce thrombosis.

Professor Yan Yan of his team said: "We designed the world's first completely autonomous, precise delivery and targeted therapy DNA robot system. This is a major advancement of DNA nanotechnology in the field of cancer treatment. I think this The technology is already very close to being put into practical use, and the use of specially designed nanobots carrying a variety of different drugs is expected to achieve the complete elimination of solid tumors and blood vessel-rich metastases, which will achieve the ultimate goal of cancer treatment. The treatment strategy can also be used as a platform to invest in the treatment of other diseases." The current research team is already looking for partners to transform this laboratory results.
